OFFICIAL STATEMENT FROM THE MERAGE JCC:
As a Jewish organization, we are committed to honoring the message and intent of The Sound of Music, including its powerful themes of love, family, resilience, and the courage to stand against antisemitism and oppression. Set in Austria in the late 1930’s, this musical includes the presence of Nazi imagery and language, which we acknowledge may feel uncomfortable for many members of our community. However, we believe that it would be a disservice to erase painful history, or shy away from difficult conversations. By confronting these challenging aspects of the story, we aim to preserve its historical integrity while fostering meaningful dialogue about the lessons of the past and their relevance today. We approach this production with sensitivity and respect, trusting in its power to inspire reflection and understanding.
